Sam Sodje Warns Nwabali Over ‘Overconfidence’, Says Goalkeeper Needs Psychological Support

Former Super Eagles defender, Sam Sodje, has expressed concern over the attitude of Nigeria’s first-choice goalkeeper, Stanley Nwabali, saying the Chippa United shot-stopper is beginning to show signs of overconfidence.

Sam Sodje made the remarks while speaking on Brila FM’s popular sports programme No Holds Barred with Ifeanyi Udeze, where he warned that Nwabali’s recent conduct could cost him his place in the national team.

The comments come amid growing speculation that Nwabali’s starting role is under review following a series of costly mistakes in recent matches. Head coach Eric Chelle is said to be assessing other goalkeeping options ahead of next month’s 2026 World Cup qualifying playoffs.

“When you have players like Stanley, the way he plays, talks and carries himself, there is a difference between being confident and having a bad attitude,” Sodje said.

He urged the national team handlers to take action before the situation affects results. “If the coach feels like Stanley will cost us the game, you’d better make the change now before it is too late,” he added.

Sodje further noted that Nwabali’s current form and mindset may require professional guidance. “He has been giving us signs that he will do something stupid soon. This is where a psychologist comes in,” he said.

Nwabali, who impressed at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations earlier this year, has faced mounting criticism in recent weeks over his performances for both club and country.

He was caught on camera arguing with his Super Eagles teammates while they were walking into the dressing room for the half-time break during the team’s 4-0 win over Benin Republic earlier this month.
