Birmingham City and Nigerian defender, Bright Osayi-Samuel has been hit with a one-match suspension after collecting his fifth yellow card of the season during his club’s narrow 1-0 win over Preston North End on Tuesday night.
The English Football Association confirmed the automatic ban in line with its disciplinary rules, as noted on the EFL’s official website.
Osayi-Samuel went into the referee’s book just 12 minutes into the game after bringing down Preston striker Daniel Jebbison. The booking adds to the cautions he had already received this season in matches against Ipswich Town, Blackburn Rovers, Stoke City, and Swansea City.
The 26-year-old right-back joined the Championship club on a free transfer in the summer after failing to extend his contract with Turkish side Fenerbahce. Since making the move, he has quickly become a regular feature in the squad, racking up nine appearances this season.
Tuesday’s clash at Deepdale was his first league start since September 30. He was drafted into the starting lineup late on after Patrick Roberts picked up an injury during the pre-match warm-up.
Osayi-Samuel was replaced early in the second half as a precaution having only recently recovered from his own fitness setback.
His latest booking means he will now be unavailable for his team’s next league fixture as he serves a one-match suspension. However, he will be available for selection for the Super Eagles of Nigeria for the 2026 FIFA World Cup’s CAF play-offs against Gabon in November.
