Real Madrid’s preparations for Tuesday night’s UEFA Champions League showdown with Liverpool have been hit by yet another setback after young Argentine midfielder Franco Mastantuono was ruled out with a groin injury.
The Spanish giants confirmed on Monday that the 18-year-old has been diagnosed with pubalgia, a condition that causes discomfort around the lower abdomen and groin area.
“Following tests carried out today on Franco Mastantuono by Real Madrid’s medical department, the player has been diagnosed with pubalgia. His recovery will be monitored,” the club said in a statement.
Mastantuono featured in Madrid’s 4-0 win over Valencia at the weekend, drawing praise for his movement and composure on the ball. His absence is a setback for manager Xabi Alonso, who has slowly been integrating the teenager into the first-team setup this season.
However, Alonso’s injury worries extend beyond Mastantuono. Defenders Dani Carvajal, Antonio Rüdiger, and David Alaba were also missing from training on Monday as they continue recovery from their respective knocks. Their availability for the Liverpool clash remains uncertain.
The teenage midfielder has been in and out of the squad recently, especially since the return of key players like Jude Bellingham and Eduardo Camavinga, but his potential has made him one of the most talked-about prospects at the Bernabéu.
Real Madrid will fly to England later today after holding their final training session at Valdebebas, choosing not to train at Anfield before the match. Alonso is expected to address the media upon arrival, alongside one of his players.
The Champions League clash kicks off at 9 p.m. Nigerian time, with Madrid aiming to extend their impressive European run despite a growing list of injury concerns.
