Sunday Oliseh Dismisses Claims He Criticised Chelle After Nigeria’s World Cup Heartbreak

Sunday Oliseh has rejected reports suggesting he took a swipe at Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle following Nigeria’s failure to reach the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Nigeria’s bid ended in frustration after a 4-3 penalty shootout loss to DR Congo, with the match locked at 1-1 before the spot kicks. The disappointment quickly fuelled speculation, including claims that Oliseh had been openly critical of the man on the touchline.

The former Nigeria captain has now pushed back against those rumours. Taking to 𝕏, he said his remarks were twisted and insisted that he never questioned Chelle’s competence.

Oliseh explained that his concern was not about the Malian’s ability but the decision to overlook a qualified Nigerian coach for the role. He also acknowledged the work Chelle has put in since taking charge.

“Correction please, I didn’t criticise the coach, watch the clip again, I was unhappy he was appointed instead of a qualified Nigerian, but so far he (Chelle) has done relatively well. Let’s call a spade, a spade!,” he wrote.

With the World Cup no longer in the picture, attention now shifts to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco. Nigeria will face Uganda, Tunisia and Tanzania in Group C as the journey towards another continental title begins.

Chelle is expected to announce his provisional squad in the coming days as preparations for the tournament gather momentum.
