Ikorodu City continued their impressive run in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), climbing to the top of the table for the first time this season after a 2-1 win over Plateau United at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena on Sunday.
The first half offered little to separate both sides, but the hosts found their spark as soon as play resumed. Joseph Arumala opened the scoring in the 47th minute, guiding home a well-curled free kick from Folarin Temitope.
The goal tilted the game in Ikorodu City’s favour, and the momentum grew even stronger seven minutes later when substitute Alade Balogun poked in the second.
Plateau United managed to cut the deficit late in the game through Wisdom Ndon, yet Ikorodu City stayed composed to protect their lead until the final whistle.
The victory extends the Lagos club’s strong form, with four wins recorded in their last five NPFL matches. It also came on a day when Nasarawa United dropped crucial points in Owerri, held to a 1-1 draw by newcomers Kun Khalifat FC. Abia Warriors suffered a setback as well, losing 2-1 to Bayelsa United in Yenagoa.
Rivers United took full advantage of the slip-ups around them, moving into second place after a 2-1 home win against Warri Wolves. Adebambo Ademola stunned the home crowd with a 25th-minute opener, but Emmanuel Nnaji levelled just five minutes later. Samson Obi completed the comeback midway through the second half, handing Warri Wolves their second straight defeat.
At Enyimba, the tension around coach Stanley Eguma is beginning to thicken after another disappointing home loss. Wikki Tourists left Aba with a 1-0 win, marking Enyimba’s fourth defeat of the season and their second inside their stadium.
Eguma had been given a two-game ultimatum earlier this month, a run that produced a win over Kano Pillars and a goalless draw against Abia Warriors before this latest setback.
The bottom four remain unchanged, with Bendel Insurance and Kun Khalifat tied on 12 points, Barau FC on 10 and former champions Kano Pillars struggling at the foot of the NPFL table with just six points.
