Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey has opened up about Nigeria’s disappointment following their failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Canada, the USA, and Mexico.
The Super Eagles’ hopes ended on Sunday in Rabat, Morocco, when they lost 4-3 on penalties to DR Congo in the playoff final.
Calvin Bassey was solid throughout the match, marshalling Nigeria’s defence with composure. However, the opening penalty of the shootout proved costly.
The Fulham defender who was tasked with taking the first kick saw his shot sail over the crossbar, setting the tone for the tense shootout that ultimately went against the Super Eagles.
Speaking briefly to reporters after the match, Bassey said, “It was nice. A lot happened but it is just what it is.”
