Ancelotti Backs Mourinho For Dramatic Real Madrid Return

Former Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti has publicly backed Jose Mourinho for a sensational return to the Santiago Bernabeu amid growing speculation over the future direction of the Spanish giants.

Mourinho, who is currently in charge of Benfica, has recently been linked with a second spell at Real Madrid as the club continues to search for stability during what many observers describe as a turbulent transitional period. Questions surrounding leadership, dressing-room harmony, and tactical direction have intensified in recent months, fueling discussions about whether an experienced and authoritative figure like Mourinho could once again be the solution.

Speaking in an interview with The Athletic, Ancelotti expressed strong support for Mourinho and insisted that the Portuguese coach still possesses the qualities needed to succeed at the highest level of European football. The Italian tactician, who currently manages the Brazil national football team, said he would be pleased to see Mourinho return to Madrid.

According to Ancelotti, Mourinho has consistently demonstrated his managerial quality throughout his career and has succeeded at nearly every club he has managed. He stated that Mourinho would be capable of doing “a fantastic job” if given another opportunity at Real Madrid, emphasizing the Portuguese coach’s pedigree and experience in handling elite teams and high-pressure environments.

Mourinho’s first spell at Real Madrid lasted from 2010 to 2013 and remains one of the most discussed eras in the club’s modern history. During that period, he guided Madrid to a La Liga title, a Copa del Rey trophy, and a Supercopa de España. More importantly, many supporters believe he helped restore a winning mentality at the club during a time when FC Barcelona, led by Pep Guardiola, dominated Spanish and European football.

Although Mourinho’s time in Madrid was often marked by controversy, tension, and intense rivalries, his impact on the club is still recognised by many within football. His demanding personality and strong leadership style helped transform Madrid into fierce competitors once again, laying part of the foundation for the club’s later success in Europe.

Ancelotti also addressed recent claims regarding problems inside the Real Madrid dressing room. Reports had suggested that former midfielder and coach Xabi Alonso found the squad “impossible to coach” during a brief spell in charge. However, the veteran Italian coach strongly rejected such suggestions and dismissed the reports as inaccurate.

He insisted that the idea that Real Madrid players refuse to follow instructions or operate without discipline is completely false. According to Ancelotti, portraying the players as uncontrollable creates a misleading image of the club and ignores the professionalism that exists within the squad.

The former Madrid boss explained that his own approach to coaching was based on collaboration and communication. Rather than imposing tactics without discussion, he preferred involving players in the strategic process so they fully understood and believed in the game plan. However, he stressed that this did not mean there was no discipline or structure within the team.

Ancelotti pointed to the success achieved during his time at the club as evidence that the players remained committed and focused. Under his leadership, Real Madrid won two UEFA Champions League titles in four years, achievements he believes would not have been possible without strong tactical discipline and collective commitment from the squad.

Reflecting further on the pressures of managing Real Madrid, Ancelotti highlighted the importance of man-management in modern football. He explained that he has always tried to build relationships with players on a personal level, treating them as individuals first before viewing them solely as footballers. According to him, understanding personalities and building trust are essential elements for success at elite clubs.

His comments have reignited conversations about Mourinho’s potential return and the type of leadership Real Madrid may require moving forward. While no official decision has been made regarding the club’s managerial future, speculation continues to grow as supporters and analysts debate the best path forward.

For now, Ancelotti’s endorsement has added significant weight to Mourinho’s candidacy, reinforcing the belief that the Portuguese coach still has the experience, authority, and mentality needed to thrive once again at one of the world’s biggest football clubs.
