Okpebholo Appoints Igbo Community Leader As Edo Commissioner
Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has approved the nomination of businessman and politician, Martin Anayochukwu Oli, as a commissioner-designate in the state.
The nomination was announced in a statement issued to Coolbase Media News on Wednesday by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Umar Musa Ikhilor. According to the statement, the appointment forms part of the governor’s efforts to strengthen his administration by bringing experienced professionals and respected community leaders into key positions in government.
The state government disclosed that Martin Anayochukwu Oli’s name will be forwarded to the Edo State House of Assembly for screening and confirmation, in line with constitutional provisions governing the appointment of commissioners in the state.
If confirmed by lawmakers, Oli will join the Edo State Executive Council, where he is expected to contribute to the implementation of Governor Okpebholo’s development agenda aimed at improving governance, infrastructure, economic growth, and public service delivery across the state.
According to the statement, Oli hails from Aninri Local Government Area of Enugu State but has built a strong reputation in Edo State through years of business, political involvement, and community development initiatives.
The government described him as an accomplished businessman and politician who has distinguished himself through consistent contributions to the growth of commerce, entrepreneurship, and grassroots empowerment. His influence within the Igbo community in Edo State has also earned him recognition as one of its prominent leaders.
The statement noted that throughout his career, Oli has remained actively involved in initiatives designed to promote social and economic development. His efforts, it added, have impacted various communities through projects focused on youth empowerment, support for small businesses, and community engagement.
According to the government, his track record in both business and politics demonstrates a commitment to development-oriented leadership and public service, qualities that informed Governor Okpebholo’s decision to nominate him for a commissioner position.
The administration further stated that Oli’s nomination reflects the governor’s commitment to building an inclusive government that accommodates competent individuals from diverse backgrounds who are willing to contribute meaningfully to the development of Edo State.
The statement emphasized that Governor Okpebholo believes governance should be driven by merit, competence, and commitment to service rather than ethnic or regional considerations.
It explained that by nominating a respected leader of the Igbo community in Edo State, the administration is reinforcing its resolve to promote unity, peaceful coexistence, and collaboration among the various ethnic groups living and conducting business in the state.
According to the government, Edo State remains home to people from different parts of Nigeria, and the administration is committed to ensuring that every resident has an opportunity to participate in the state’s development regardless of their origin.
The statement also highlighted Oli’s extensive experience in the private sector, describing him as someone who has successfully combined business leadership with community service. It noted that his experience would be valuable in supporting government policies aimed at attracting investment, creating employment opportunities, and stimulating economic growth.
Governor Okpebholo’s administration reiterated its determination to assemble a team of capable individuals with the expertise required to drive reforms and deliver on campaign promises made to the people of Edo State.
The government added that the administration would continue to identify and appoint qualified professionals whose experience and dedication align with its vision of inclusive governance, sustainable development, and improved service delivery.
The nomination, however, remains subject to legislative approval. The Edo State House of Assembly is expected to invite Martin Anayochukwu Oli for screening, during which lawmakers will assess his qualifications, experience, and suitability for appointment as a commissioner.
If successfully screened and confirmed, Oli will officially become a member of the Edo State Executive Council and assume responsibilities as may be assigned by Governor Okpebholo as the administration continues to pursue its development agenda for the state.
