Bayern Munich boss Vincent Kompany says Harry Kane’s remarkable form this season is down to the striker’s own hunger and hard work, not coaching influence or tactical tweaks.
Harry Kane has been in stunning form, finding the net 11 times in six Bundesliga matches and racking up 18 goals across all competitions. His goals have powered Bayern to ten straight victories, keeping their unbeaten run alive in both league and Europe.
The England captain also grabbed a brace in the Three Lions’ 5-0 victory over Latvia on Tuesday, a result that booked their ticket to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
When asked about Kane’s recent comments crediting him for his improvement, Kompany was quick to brush off the compliment.
“He has unlocked that next level himself,” Kompany told journalists ahead of Saturday’s Bundesliga Klassiker against Borussia Dortmund.
“He has always done it in his career. His development is a mentality thing. He worked every year. Maybe it helped that he had not won the titles until then, because he kept that hunger that you expect from young players.”
Kane, widely regarded as one of the best strikers of his generation, won numerous individual awards during his time at Tottenham Hotspur but only broke his long wait for a major trophy last season, when Bayern clinched the Bundesliga title.
“You cannot develop such a player further,” Kompany added. “He has to want it.”
The Belgian coach will be counting on Kane’s sharpness again when Bayern host Dortmund in a clash that could shape the early title race. Dortmund, sitting second and four points behind, have conceded only once in their last five league matches and remain unbeaten in all competitions.
“It’s first against second, both teams unbeaten,” Kompany said. “It is clear why this match is being made so big. We are both undefeated so it is two fists going against each other.”
Kompany also shared positive news about Alphonso Davies, who has been sidelined with a serious knee injury. The 23-year-old left-back could return earlier than expected.
“I had initially hoped that he would be back at the beginning of January. But as things stand now, he may be back a little earlier,” Kompany revealed. “If he can play a few more games in December, then everyone has done a wonderful job. His body has to respond to the new strain week after week. If things continue to go well, then a very fit Alphonso will be back in December.”
