The Super Eagles will take to the pitch in Polokwane this evening, hoping to keep their World Cup qualification hopes alive when they face Lesotho at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in South Africa.

For weeks, it seemed Nigeria’s dream of returning to the world stage was slipping away. But a twist in Group C has breathed new life into their campaign.

South Africa were recently stripped of points after fielding an ineligible player, Taboho Mokoena, in their qualifier against Lesotho in March. The decision has reshuffled the table and handed the Super Eagles a much-needed lifeline.

Before that ruling, Nigeria were staring at the possibility of missing consecutive World Cups for the first time in decades. A frustrating 1-1 draw against South Africa last month left them six points behind Hugo Broos’s men, with two games remaining. Now, the gap has been reduced to three points, and suddenly, qualification looks possible again.

To stand a chance, Nigeria must win both of their remaining matches, against Lesotho tonight and Benin Republic next week, while hoping South Africa drop points against Zimbabwe or Rwanda.

As it stands, Benin Republic lead the group with 14 points and a +4 goal difference. South Africa are second with 14 points and a goal difference of +2, while Nigeria sit third with 11 points and the same goal difference. Rwanda follow closely, also on 11 points but with fewer goals scored.

The situation leaves five teams still mathematically capable of topping the group. For Nigeria, that makes tonight’s clash against Lesotho a must-win encounter.

Lesotho, sitting fifth with nine points, still has a chance to qualify for their first-ever World Cup. Their confidence will be boosted by their performance in the reverse fixture last November, when they held Nigeria to a 1-1 draw in Uyo.

All eyes will be on Victor Osimhen, who returns to the Super Eagles squad after a brief fitness issue. He is expected to lead the attack tonight. The Galatasaray striker has scored three goals in the qualifiers and remains Nigeria’s biggest threat in front of goal.

The stakes could not be higher. A win tonight keeps the Super Eagles in the race. Anything less could mean another painful miss on football’s biggest stage.

The Super Eagles vs Lesotho clash is scheduled to kick off at 5 p.m. Nigerian Time today, October 10.
