Mohamed Salah may not be on Liverpool’s flight to Italy for Tuesday’s Champions League tie with Inter, as questions continue to rise around his place in the travelling squad.
The club is holding talks behind closed doors after the forward’s pointed remarks earlier this week put the spotlight on a tense situation.
Transfer expert, Fabrizio Romano highlighted the issue on Monday, writing on 𝕏, “Mo Salah could be out of the Liverpool squad set to travel to Italy to face Inter on Tuesday. Internal discussions are taking place after Salah’s strong words, with a final verdict to follow today. Arne Slot will speak to the press later today.”
The Liverpool manager is expected to address the matter when he speaks to journalists this afternoon. Slot has not commented so far, choosing instead to keep the discussion in-house while the club assesses the fallout from one of their most influential players.
Liverpool are due to head to San Siro later today, although there remains serious doubt about whether Salah will be named in the group for the match.
The Egyptian forward recently voiced his annoyance at the limited minutes he has been given, adding that someone at the club appears to want him to take the blame for recent problems.
The situation has sparked debate among former players. Danny Murphy, once a key figure in Liverpool’s midfield, criticised Salah’s decision to go public with his frustration. Murphy believes the comments could unsettle the dressing room and increase the pressure on Slot.
“I do think he will [play again],” Murphy said.
“I think he’ll have time to settle down. Everyone will want a legend like Salah to go on good terms with a wonderful send-off, maybe at the end of the season as great players have had in the past.
“I hope it doesn’t end badly because of everything he’s given but there’s always a chance if he’s adamant.
“Liverpool are in charge of what happens because they have got his contract. But if he’s adamant he wants to leave, maybe we’ll see something in January.”
