The Senate on Tuesday confirmed the appointment of Hon. Justice Joseph Olubunmi Kayode Oyewole (JCA) as a Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.
The confirmation followed the presentation and consideration of the report of the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters, chaired by Senator Adeniyi Adegbonmire (APC, Ondo Central).
While presenting the report, Adegbonmire said the committee found Justice Oyewole qualified and competent to serve at the apex court.
“That the Senate do receive and consider the report of the Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights & Legal Matters on the confirmation of the nomination of Hon. Justice Joseph Olubunmi Kayode Oyewole, JCA, as a Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria,” Adegbonmire stated.
President Bola Tinubu had last week written to the Senate, requesting the confirmation of Justice Oyewole for elevation to the Supreme Court.
The letter, which was read by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, cited Section 231(2) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) as the legal basis for the nomination.
Tinubu wrote, “Pursuant to Section 231 (2) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended…
“I am pleased to present for confirmation by the Senate the appointment of Hon. Justice Oyewole Kayode as Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.
“While it is my hope that the Senate will consider and confirm the nomination expeditiously, please accept the assurances of my highest regards.”
Following the President’s letter, Akpabio had referred the request to the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters for legislative scrutiny.
After reviewing the nominee’s credentials, judicial track record, and responses during screening, the committee recommended his confirmation.
The Senate unanimously adopted the recommendation, formally confirming Justice Oyewole’s elevation to the nation’s highest court.
