Werder Bremen coach, Horst Steffen, has once more taken aim at Nigerian striker, Victor Boniface, after he failed to impress in their 1-1 draw with Mainz on Saturday.
Victor Boniface, currently on loan from Bayer Leverkusen, endured another quiet evening, struggling to influence the game as Bremen dropped points at home. His display left Steffen visibly frustrated, prompting the coach to question his effort and consistency in front of goal.
“He tried to hold onto the ball up front,” Steffen said in a post-match interview with Bild. “Today I thought to myself: Come on, he can do even better.”
Statistics from the match painted a grim picture. Boniface failed to record a single shot on target, provided no assists, and completed just 53 percent of his passes from 28 touches. German outlet Bild rated his performance a 5, suggesting a lack of sharpness and impact over the 90 minutes.
The 24-year-old has now gone seven league matches without a goal for Bremen, contributing only one assist since joining the club. The underwhelming run has raised doubts about his ability to adapt to Steffen’s attacking system.
It’s not the first time the Bremen manager has criticised the Super Eagles striker. After their 3-0 loss to Freiburg earlier in the season, Steffen complained that Boniface “was too ‘everywhere’ for me,” hinting at a lack of positional discipline.
